Ready for National Night Out

It looks and feels like a block party except this one has an important message behind it, about coming together as a community to fight crime. We know it as National Night Out (NNO) and it’s happening city-wide today. The community-building program was introduced 33 years ago to promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live.

For the past eight years CPS Energy has prepared for the event by producing hundreds of National Night Out kits. Since 2008 over 3,300 boxes have reached hundreds of communities across the city every first Tuesday in October. Each kit includes enough information for 30 attendees and contains literature on energy efficiency tips, money saving programs and safety around electricity and natural gas.

Assembling the NNO kits is no small feat. That’s why we’re grateful to our wonderful partners at The Unicorn Center (A United Way Partner Agent) and The San Antonio Police Department’s (SAPD), Volunteers in Policing (VIP) who helped us assemble and distribute 600 kits in time for tonight’s city events.

And the 2015 National Night Out Award goes to…

San Antonio! That’s right, we ranked #2 with the most NNO events in comparison to other cities with the same population. And Texas won the “State Cup Award” for having five Texas cities with 300K + in population with a NNO event. This year we’re off to earning another top spot with more than 850 local communities registered for a NNO event tonight. Way to go San Antonio!
